大家好！“外企头条”栏目又跟大家见面了。在2017年最后一期年终特稿，我们推出华裔青年陈希宇（Stephen Chen）写的文章《希望总是存在》。

这位在美国出生的青年作为志愿者翻译，随美国医疗队来到西安。这次公益志愿之旅改变了他的职业规划，选择投身医疗行业救助他人作为人生奋斗的目标。

希望总是存在

Hope will always exist

我叫陈希宇（Stephen Chen），出生在美国北加州一个华裔家庭。

My name is Stephen Chen, I was born in a Chinese American family in northern California.

我在社区里一直活跃，无论是主持小学生的夏令营，还是在学校的社团工作。但我大多数的义工活动都局限于本地。

Normally I am very active in my community, running summer camps for elementary kids, and working with my Interact Club at school. Most community service events, however, are local.

高三暑假，我参加了一个美国医疗队, 花了几个星期去中国西安为贫困儿童治疗唇裂。

One summer during my high school years, I joined an American medical mission, spending several weeks to treat young patients with clef lips from poor families around Xian, China.

正是这个难忘的经历帮助我投身医疗行业。

It is this experience that help to shape my career focus in medical profession.

凭借我的中英双语能力，我参加了一个由医生护士组成的美国医疗队，前往中国西安为唇裂儿童做手术修复。

Using my bilingual (English and Chinese) skills, I joined an American team of surgeons and nurses as a translator traveling to Xian, China to perform surgery>我的责任比我想象的要大，但我必须担当。

My responsibilities>我把医生的需求翻译告知旅馆工作人员，出租车司机，帮助他们与中国支持团队的交流。

I translated the needs of the doctors to the hotel staff, for their taxi rides back and forth from the hospital, and assisted in the communication between the doctors and their Chinese support staff.

我还为美国护士与中国护士之间的交流做翻译。

I also translated for American nurses so they could work well with the Chinese nurses.

行程之前，我读过有关裂唇的资料，但这与我的所见所闻有着天壤之别。

Before this trip, I had read about deformities such as cleft lip, but nothing prepared me for what I saw.

看到满屋子柔弱的小婴儿使我为之心痛。这些孩子出生在贫困家庭无法支付手术，更有许多被父母抛弃的孤儿。

Seeing a room full of fragile little Chinese babies made my heart ache for them. These kids were born to families too poor to pay for their surgeries, and even worse, many of them were orphans abandoned by their parents.

我把一个这样的孩子抱在怀里，心想，“虽然他们在其他方面都很完美，他们的未来会不会一辈子被这种形体和心理的缺陷所折磨？”

Holding>幸运的是，医生们在这里施展神奇，而我在手术室里见证了这一切。

Luckily, the doctors were there to perform miracles, and I was in the Operating Room to witness them.

整个过程包括了一个小时的精密手术。当最后一针缝合之后，孩子的裂唇再也看不到了。

After an hour of precise incisions, the procedure was complete. When the last stitches were in place and the child’s cleft was no longer visible.

我意识到这些医生有能力完成我一直想要做的事情 -- 改变他人的生活。

I realized these doctors had the power to do something I have been wanting to do – to change the lives of other people.

我一直自以为有意愿有能力帮助他人，但这些医生的杰作超越了我的所作所为。

I have always taken pride in being willing and able to help others, but these doctors’ jobs transcended my efforts.

凭借他们的双手和技能，他们改变了一个孩子的人生。

They were able to completely turn a child’s life around with just their hands and knowledge.

他们让我知道，无论在世界的哪个角落，一点点善意加上医学技能可以改变生活，拯救生命。

They showed me that a little goodwill and quite a lot of medical skill could provide life-changing and life-saving experiences to people who suffer, anywhere in the world.

希望总是存在，我想要传递这种希望，我想要当医生！

Hope will always exist. I want to be able to deliver the hope. I want to be a doctor!

在我们行程的最后一天，一个充满谢意的母亲亲自来道别。

On our last day,>她提出一个要求，“等你们再来中国的时候，欢迎你们住到我家里。”

As a final request she offered, “When you guys return to China, you are welcome to stay at our home.”

正是像这位母亲这样的感激之情使得我的义工之旅充满价值。

It’s the gratitude of people like this mother who make a volunteer experience like this worthwhile.

她向医生索取名片说，“当我女儿长大之后，我要叫她找你们，要她当面感谢你们。”

“When my daughter grows up,” the mother also asked doctors for their business cards, “I’ll have her find you and thank you herself.”

我忍着眼泪翻译了这一段。在我们这个变幻无常的世界上，我被人们的善良所震撼。

I fought back tears as I translated. In our ever-changing world, I was stunned by the good-hearted nature of people.

真正身临海外帮助需要的人们，这次是一个实实在在的经历。

Actually being abroad and helping the needy people was a much more satisfying experience.

我为改善贫穷儿童生活出了一份力。最大收获是同时感受到受益人的感激之情。

I was a part of the process to improve the lives of underprivileged children. And the best part was receiving the gratitude of the genuinely thankful people.

我期望在未来的行程中再次有这种经历，那时我也许作为一个医生而来。

I hope to be able to experience it>我的中国义工之旅不但治愈了贫困孩子的唇裂，也帮助自己重新定义了职业规划。

My volunteer trip to China not>我选择去加大伯克利分校学习生物，在南加大得到了DPT学位(理疗医师）。

I went go to study biology at University of Berkeley, and then obtained the DPT degree from University of Southern California.
